Five quick and easy snack ideas to satisfy hungry tummies after school. Perfect for kids, teens
Through elementary school, middle school and now high school, the first thing my kids want when they get home from school is food! Sitting through classes, using your brain… it makes ya hungry! Even adults need a little something mid-day to get from lunch to dinner.
Over the years I have tried to keep my kitchen stocked with healthy snacks so my kids can develop healthy snacking habits. (Occasionally a bag of chips or chocolate bar does sneak in there!) With a little
- Keep snacks simple and easy to grab.
- A snack should be around 250 calories or less.
- Ideally, a snack should include some protein.
- If you’re home, enjoy a snack with your kids while you hear all about their day.
- If you’re not home, leave a note or post a snack schedule on the fridge.
- On the go, or in the car after-school? Pack a snack in a container such as Easy Lunchboxes Snack Box (affiliate link).
- Stay hydrated! Water is ideal. Try to avoid sugary drinks.
5 Healthy Snacks From Target
I picked up all of these snacks at Target for about $30. (You should be able to find most of these items at any grocery store.) I searched for the healthiest snacks I could find thinking I’d have one for each school day (for variety). Most of these snack items ended up lasting over 3 weeks!
1. Pita Chips, Carrots & Hummus
Pick up a bag of Simply Naked Pita Chips ($2.99), Organic Baby Carrots ($1.59), and a container of Organic Hummus ($2.99).
This snack may be more appealing to kids if you present it on a plate. Or, skip the fuss and simply pull out the chips, carrots
2. Nuts & Fruit
Nuts are pricey, but they’ll last. Pick up a couple of different types of nuts for variety, such as Archer Farms Lightly Salted Roasted Cashews and Archer Farms Roasted Macadamia Nuts (on sale for $5.50 each). Grab a 3 lb bag of Cuties Mandarins ($4.99).
Nuts are one of the healthiest and simplest snacks on the planet! Avoid processed, sugary nuts and stick to nuts that are raw or roasted. Add some natural sweetness by pairing nuts with fruit such as
3. Cereal & Banana
Pick up a box of Kashi Dark Cocoa Karma Cereal ($2.99 on sale), some Bananas ($0.29 each) and Unsweetened Original Almond Milk ($3.19), a staple in
I know cereal is usually a breakfast item, but in our home, we treat it more like a snack. Try to find cereal made with whole grains and at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. We love Kashi cereals… the Dark Cocoa Biscuits feel like a treat. Top with sliced banana and you have a satisfying snack. On the go? Grab a banana and pack a serving of cereal in a container sans milk. (My daughter never eats her cereal with milk anyway!)
By the way, a serving of Kashi Dark Cocoa Biscuits is 34 biscuits (hello… that’s a lot!), 210 calories, 6 grams of fiber, 5 grams of protein, and 9 grams of sugar.
4. Cheese & Crackers
Pick up a box of Target’s version of Triscuits, Original Woven Wheats Baked Crackers ($1.89) and a block of Cracker Barrel Vermont Sharp White Cheese (on sale for $2.76).
This classic snack is a favorite! You can never go wrong with crackers and cheese whether it’s an appetizer for a dinner party or a snack for kids. Slice the cheese ahead and store
5. Frozen Fruit Bar
Pick up a box of 6 Outshine Fruit Bars ($3.99)
During the warmer months (which is almost all the time in Florida!), my kids are hot and thirsty when they get home from school. A cold, refreshing popsicle can really hit the spot! Outshine fruit bars are a great option because real fruit is the first ingredient (strawberries) and there are no artificial colors or flavors. Only 60 calories per serving and no protein, so if your kids are really hungry pair this frozen treat with a handful of nuts.
An entire weeks worth of snacks (many being stretched out further), and no Doritos, pretzels or goldfish in sight! Challenge your kids, and yourself, to commit to a week of healthy snacks! Be prepared and stock up!
