This is probably one of the first fantasy series I ever picked up and I love it for that.

Over time, magicians learned to work spells only in their own realms and forgot the others. This saga is the reason why I never enjoyed Harry Potter at a young age. These days, I’m a little too jaded and I’ve read a few too many works in a very similar vein. Now only the few who have survived the Labyrinth and crossed the Death Gate know of the presence of all four realms--and even they have yet to unravel the mysteries. Enough details about the world and upcoming conflict are hinted at, but the world and story can be enjoyed as a stand alone effort in this volume. How does Amazon calculate star ratings? This also take into consideraton of other generas such as sci fi ect, but if an author wishes it to be fantasy then they had better study LOTR first. Over time, magicians learned to work spells only in their own realms and forgot the others. He reads the stuff, and sometimes he gets on me to read certain titles too.

it's starts a little slow... you have to make it to the point where haplo is introduced, the main character in the series. Anywho, if you like epic fantasy I think you will find this series, and this book in particular, very enjoyable. These days, I’m a little too jaded and I’ve read a few too many works in a very similar vein.

Read it again. And I must say that, once again, I was transported to a land of magic and adventure that I would love to explore in a years-long role-playing campaign.

I've read a few other dragon themed series and this one just can't hold a candle to those. The difference are two races, Patryns and Sartans (demigods in their own minds). 5 star (0%) 0% 4 star (0%) 0% 3 star (0%) 0% 2 star (0%) 0% 1 star (0%) 0% The Death Gate Cycle. I split the review for this up... Too long = too lazy to read (admit it). I was recently telling a friend and her husband (and you know who you are, Emily) how wonderful these books were, and as I was talking to them, I managed to talk myself into re-reading the books. loved it because it spoke about a tiered world, with the gegs (dwarves) being the ones on the bottom rung, totally exploited by other beings who proclaimed themselves to be gods and afraid of the elves!!

The first book is amazingly spry in that they don't bog it down with endless details and make it carry the entire world-building burden.

The Sky Realm where this book is set has been split apart by a powerful race of magicians long ago. Need another excuse to treat yourself to a new book this week? The maps and diagrams in the front of the book certainly helped. by Spectra. We've got you covered with the buzziest new releases of the day. I couldn't help but feel it might have been better to wait until I've finished book seven.

It’s been roughly fifteen years since then, and of course, the reading experience changed.

Now what I am saying is not that there are rules on writing, which there should never be, but when LOTR what written there were six elements that made it fantasy and if those elements are not present or explained, ie. Sorry. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. Over time, magicians learned to work spells only in their own realms and forgot the others.

And, of course, since Weis and Hickman wrote the original Dragonlance novels, we got our fist dive into the Death Gate Cycle... and our last for several years, since the next books were not available where we lived. Loved it.

608 reviews. Set in a world that is bizarre and novel in construction, but self consistent, different races live segregated lives. Imagine something like the grand mythos of Tolkien adapted for the stage by an exuberant community theatre company. I think that actually helps the plot in this case, where too much skulduggery could seriously bog things down.

Their war led to the Sundering of the world. Completely changed my thinking as an RPG player.

Let me say this, if you think 'oh no it's just another fantasy series', think again.

Somehow, this book was what I needed to get back. The Patryns were imprisoned in the hellish Labyrinth and the world was split into four—one for each of the old elements. One of the most dull and boring books I've read in decades. If you are needing a good story, the kind you will read over and over, this is it! Let's face it, the world(s) being presented here is almost a character in its own right.

0.0 out of 5 stars. Our main antagonists, Haplo and Alfred are introduced and by the end of the book I was sucked back in and ready to read the next one.

loved it because it spoke about a tiered world, with the gegs (dwarves) being the ones on the bottom rung, totally exploited by other beings who proclaimed themselves to be gods and afraid of the elves!! If someone were to sit down with this book for a day or two and had any decent reading speed they would be done with the book that quickly. And, of course, since Weis and Hickman wrote the original Dragonlance novels, we got our fist dive into the Death Gate Cycle... and our last for several years, since the next books were not available where we lived. It is one of the series I like to drag out and reread every now and then. One or two of the characters left me cold, but that didn't really alter my reading. One or two of the characters left me cold, but that didn't really alter my reading experience. I first read these as a teenager and I was completely and utterly hooked. Helpful new hero archytypes must be explained, then it is a bad fantasy. The middle realm which is the most resource-rich lacks access to water, and the lower realm is trapped below and drowned by an overabundance of water and storm. A huge wow for this book, I do think this is my very favourite book so far in the dragonlance series and it is the first book from the death gate cycle. I’m glad to catch up on the series as I’ve been meaning to read it for quite some time.

I'm not too sure how to approach a review of this book. I did enjoy the surprises and twists, although the intrigue (political and otherwise) being presented here is not nearly on the same level as what can be found in other series'.
